Born and raised in Hyderabad, Pakistan, Dr. Hameed graduated from Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (formerly Sindh Medical University). He pursued postgraduate medical training in Ireland, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCP) in 1999. He subsequently completed advanced specialist training in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and General Internal Medicine in some of the United Kingdom's leading teaching hospitals, including Hammersmith Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital, and St. George's Hospital, London.
Following completion of his specialist training, Dr. Hameed served as a substantive Consultant Physician within the West Midlands NHS before joining Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), Abu Dhabi, in 2008. During his 14 years at ICLDC, one of the world's leading diabetes institutions, he played a significant role in delivering world-class diabetes care, mentoring physicians, nurses, and diabetes educators, while actively participating in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and medical education.
In recognition of his professional achievements, he was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI). Throughout his career, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and scientific abstracts and has been an invited speaker at regional and international diabetes conferences. He has also served as a tutor for the Postgraduate Diploma in Diabetes at Cardiff University, contributing to the education of healthcare professionals across the globe.

Despite a demanding international career, Dr. Hameed remained deeply
committed to addressing the growing diabetes epidemic in Pakistan.
Motivated by compassion and a vision of equitable healthcare, he founded
The Diabetes Centre Pakistan and Overseas Chapters (TDC) in 2011 as a
not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive,
multidisciplinary diabetes care regardless of a patient’s financial
circumstances.
What began as a dream has evolved into one of Pakistan’s leading
charitable diabetes institutions. Established through the generosity of
donors and overseas Pakistanis, the flagship centre in Islamabad was
developed at a cost exceeding AED 27 million and has become a centre of
excellence for diabetes prevention, diagnosis, treatment, education,
research, and rehabilitation.
Since its inception, TDC has served hundreds of thousands of patients from every province of Pakistan as well as neighbouring Afghanistan. The Centre has become renowned for providing affordable—and for many patients completely free—high-quality care to those who would otherwise have limited access to specialist diabetes services.
Building Pakistan’s Most Comprehensive Diabetes Centre
After relocating permanently to Pakistan in 2022, Dr. Hameed devoted himself full-time to expanding TDC into a truly comprehensive diabetes and endocrine institute.
Under his leadership, the organization has established additional centres and outreach services in Karachi, Sahiwal, G-8 Islamabad, and Charsadda, with further expansion planned across Pakistan.

Nearly 60% of patients currently receive treatment supported through Zakat and charitable donations, ensuring that financial hardship never becomes a barrier to quality diabetes care.
A Global Humanitarian Vision
Throughout his years in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Hameed travelled to Pakistan almost every month to conduct free clinics, supervise clinical services, train healthcare professionals, and oversee TDC’s development. He also established an international network of volunteer specialists—including cardiologists, neurologists, physicians, surgeons, and allied health professionals—who continue to donate their expertise to patient care in Pakistan.
His vision has inspired thousands of overseas Pakistanis to contribute towards improving diabetes care in their homeland. Today, The Diabetes Centre Pakistan has established registered chapters in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia, helping raise awareness, mobilize charitable support, and promote diabetes prevention internationally.
Advancing Education and Research
Dr. Hameed firmly believes that education is fundamental to combating the diabetes epidemic. He has trained numerous physicians, diabetes educators, nurses, dietitians, and healthcare professionals throughout his career and continues to lead initiatives aimed at developing Pakistan’s future diabetes workforce.
Under his leadership, TDC has developed structured diabetes education programmes, patient awareness campaigns, tele-education services, and research collaborations with national and international institutions. His long-term vision includes establishing Pakistan’s first dedicated Diabetes University Hospital and internationally accredited training programmes in diabetes care.
A Family Dedicated to Service
Dr. Hameed’s mission is shared by his wife, Dr. Nuzhat Hameed, who left her position at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre to dedicate herself full-time to The Diabetes Centre Pakistan.
Working entirely on a voluntary basis, she established one of Pakistan’s most comprehensive multidisciplinary Type 1 Diabetes programmes. Under her leadership, more than 3,800 children and adolescents living with Type 1 diabetes receive specialist care, education, insulin, glucose monitoring equipment, test strips, lancets, and ongoing multidisciplinary support—much of it provided free of charge through charitable funding.
Together, Dr. Asjad and Dr. Nuzhat Hameed have devoted their lives to transforming diabetes care in Pakistan and ensuring that every individual, regardless of financial means, has access to world-class treatment.
Legacy
Dr. Asjad Hameed’s life’s work extends far beyond clinical medicine. He has built a movement dedicated to improving diabetes care, preventing complications, advancing education, empowering healthcare professionals, and inspiring communities to take action against one of Pakistan’s greatest public health challenges.
His vision remains clear: To establish Pakistan as a regional leader in diabetes prevention, treatment, research, education, and compassionate patient-centred care, ensuring that no person is denied life-saving diabetes services because of financial hardship.
